Day 24: 24 Things I Learned From The 24 Day Challenge

by carolyn on April 24, 2012

  1. One should not pregame a cleanse by eating lots of junk food. It actually makes the transition much more difficult.
  2. Never attempt a challenge without a friend going through the same thing.
  3. You can celebrate Easter without candy.
  4. Hangovers are worse during a cleanse.
  5. Your food preferences/tolerances really can change so quickly. When I eat something salty now my body goes into desert survivor mode.
  6. My dependence on food was even worse than I thought as evidenced by my crazy mood swings and weird sleeping patterns.
  7. I have more willpower than I thought. I didn’t stick to the challenge 100% but I did much better than I anticipated.
  8. Even though I ended up working out less than usual, I feel more slender and less bloated. Might have some measurements tomorrow from the gym.
  9. So even though I knew that food plays a more important role in weight loss than exercise, I am now thoroughly convinced.
  10. It’s really hard to actually remember to eat every 2-3 hours.
  11. I realized that often I feel super hungry before I decide to eat – not smart.
  12. I developed a great support network through local (and global) AdvoCare distributors and they pretty much rocked at answering my questions and motivating me ALL the time.
  13. My BFF Leslie was so super supportive of my cleanse and my blog and it meant the world to me. Besties are the best!
  14. My family also set a strong precedent of support in the concessions they made for me at our family meals. I hope they realize that they’re gonna have to keep it up!!!
  15. Chick-fil-a grilled chicken nuggets are super delish.
  16. It’s so easy to cook healthy at home.
  17. And it’s more rewarding when you get to brag about it on a blog :)
  18. But it means doing dishes all the time.
  19. And it’s still really hard for me to make healthy choices when dining out.
  20. It’s hard to maintain an active Pinterest presence when cleansing because all the dessert recipes make me really hungry.
  21. I never thought this would end.
  22. Now that it’s over I wish I had stuck to it more closely.
  23. Even though the Challenge is over, the challenge of continued healthy living has but begun.
  24. I couldn’t have done this without YOU.

Carolyn, you have inspired so many by telling it like it is. I love number 23. Healthy living is a daily practice. There are tools (like the 24 day challenge) that will make it easier but it starts with a choice to put thoughts and words into action. It’s not always easy. Rarely is it perfect. Some days we fall flat on our face. What matters is whether or not we get back up. Hopefully if we are slow to do so, we have a safety net or trampoline of people waiting to catch us and move us forward. Thank you!!!

I have really enjoyed reading your blog! I’m looking forward to hearing about your journey after the cleanse. Also, I love Chick-Fil-A’s grilled nuggets. The whole gluten-free thing sort of sucks when it comes to eating fast food (people really think you’re weird when you ask for a burger or greilled chicken sandwich with no bun), and when I found out that Chick-Fil-A was going to start having grilled chicken nuggets, I got out-of-proportion excited. I went to my local restaurant before they’d even put it on the sign yet. I have eaten them at least bi-weekly since then. LOL. Anyway, I’m proud of what you’ve accomplished during this challenge, and I hope you know that I’m always rooting for you! You’d better not stop blogging now that the 24 days is over! You have a lot of fans who would be very disappointed! :)
